COMPOSING

My work as a composer ranges from classical choral music, which has been my main focus in recent years, to foot-tapping tunes for my band Kings & Folk.

I have received a variety of commissions, particularly for sacred music. The most recent are:
The Christmas Truce, a setting of Carol Ann Duffy's poem - see Latest News.
A Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis  for Gloucester Cathedral's Girl Choristers in 2017.
A Worcester Fantasy  for organ - written for Christopher Allsop, first performed at the Three Choirs Festival, July 2017, as part of the live Evensong broadcast on Radio 3.
Responses  for Worcester Cathedral Chamber Choir, for the Three Choirs Festival 2017.
Psalm 150 for choir and mixed instruments for the King's School, Worcester, May 2017.
From Heaven above to Earth I come, a carol for Worcester Cathedral Choir for Christmas 2016.
To the Eternal Father, an anthem for Worcester Cathedral's Girl Choristers, with organ and handbells, first performed in September 2016.

In July 2016 there was a live Radio 3 broadcast of The Gloucester Service, commissioned by Adrian Partington for the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival - you can hear complete recordings from Radio 3 in 'Music Samples' below.
Other large works have included a new half-hour setting of  The St. John Passion  for Gloucester Cathedral Choir, first performed on Good Friday 2014 and now performed each year at Gloucester; also  A Worcestershire Song Cycle  for the Three Choirs Festival in 2011 - this 40 minute chamber work was the first ever commission by the Festival to combine classical and folk genres.

Further commissions include carols for the choir of Bishop Perowne College performed in Worcester cathedral and a Jubilate  for Gloucester Cathedral Junior Choir.
In 2015 my madrigal What is our life?  was performed by The 24 choir of York University, conducted by Robert Hollingworth - hear the recording in 'Music Samples'.

I write and arrange the music for Kings & Folk  using  our line-up of violin, flute/whistle, piano, vocals and djembe drum. Our music has been played on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Shropshire, Gloucestershire and Hereford & Worcester.

The first CD release of my music was  from Root to Sky   in 2007, for violin, piano and voice. Tracks have been played on Radio 3 and French radio.

I also wrote the music for Springtime, a previously unset poem by the singer  Eva Cassidy. Eva's parents approved the song for public release by the singer Deborah Rose.

PERFORMING

I have performed as a pianist in my own works at the Three Choirs Festival, with the English String Orchestra, at Birmingham Town Hall, Kings Place in London and Worcester Cathedral.
With  Kings and Folk   I play at venues ranging from music festivals and folk clubs to country churches and village halls.

My teaching work at Worcester 6th Form College over the last 20 years has involved accompanying students in a wide variety of genres for concerts and exams.

I also play piano for weddings and special events, either as a soloist or with my wife Claire on violin.

TEACHING

I teach piano at Worcester Sixth Form College and privately at home. I enjoy a huge range of music and teach classical music (from Medieval to Modern), pop/rock, jazz/blues and folk.

I also teach music theory, music history, composition and improvising. I adapt my lessons to the unique needs of each pupil. If you’re keen and imaginative I’d be happy to hear from you.
